European Christmas Markets

A Christmas market is a street market celebrating Christmas during the four weeks of Advent. From Brussels to Vienna, these markets specialize in handmade crafts, mulled drinks, and other treats. AurTravel has some examples of these Christmas markets below.

Vienna, Austria: Vienna’s Christkindlmarkt opens mid-November. Over three million visitors come to shop for beeswax candles, wooden toys, and glass ornaments. Visitors can snack on cream-filled pastries, candied fruit, roasted chestnuts, and Weihnachtspunsch, which is a spiced Christmas punch.

Zagreb, Croatia: The Zagreb Christmas Market takes place in the city’s square and city center. Be entertained by local choirs, dancing, and live music. Shop seasonal gifts at the many shops around the square and strap on your boots and head onto the ice-rink in Ban Jelacic square.

Prague, Czech Republic: Prague Christmas Market opens December 2 to January 6 and sells glassware, jewelry, embroidered lace, wooden toys, and beautiful dolls dressed in traditional costumes. Traditional food being made at the Christmas market in Prague includes large hams, barbequed sausages, cakes, and pastries. Try all of them accompanied by one of the famous Czech beers.

Brussels, Belgium: Brussels’ Christmas Market opened for the first time in 2002, offering over 200 artisans from around the world with their Christmas wares and handmade crafts. Taste mussels, Belgian fries, Belgian waffles, and two of Belgium’s most famous cuisines, fine chocolate and beer. Enjoy a ride on the 160-foot Ferris wheel.
