Baggage Rules and Packing Tips

Baggage rules differ from airline to airline, with some similarities between them. There are so many different bag types to choose from: spinner, hard-sided, soft-sided, or duffel bag. Responsible for carrying your most valued items, your travel luggage should be high quality and also fit within each airline’s restrictions. AurTravel has some helpful tips to guide you through the packing process.

Restrictions

For the major airlines, the baggage is limited to 62 inches and cannot weigh more than 50 pounds. If your baggage exceeds these limitations, you may have to pay an additional fee. For carry-ons, they should fit under the seat in front of you or the in the overhead bin. The dimensions for a carry-on should not exceed 22x14x9 inches and 18x14x8 inches for a personal item such as a backpack or purse.

The 3-1-1 Rule

Carry-ons also have restrictions when it comes to liquids. The TSA allows a quart-sized bag of liquids, gels, creams, and aerosols on board an airplane. They must be 3.4 ounces or less per item; therefore this rule is known as the 3-1-1 rule. If items such as hairsprays or shampoos are larger than 3.4 ounces, they must go in checked baggage. The only two exceptions to this rule are medications and infant or child nourishment.

Packing Tips

Utilizing a packing list will help make this dreaded process stress-free! There are several apps out there for smart devices that can help save you a run to the store if you forget a necessity. To save space, try packing your items with packing cubes. These are very helpful in that they save space and organize your belongings. For your carry-on, be sure to include your essentials and a change of clothes. You never know if you are going to be delayed or if your bags will get lost in transit to your destination. Another great tip is to be selective about your footwear. Pack shoes that can be used for multiple outfits, as shoes take up a lot of space in suitcases and can be heavy.

Traveling can be difficult and packing is often half the battle. Only pack what you absolutely need and try to mix and match outfits. Be sure that your luggage follows all TSA and airlines rules and restrictions to avoid paying more for your baggage. Call the agents at AurTravel at 402.891.6909 to book your next vacation!
